Day 3:
Visit to Sigiriya Rock Fortress & Polonnaruwa Ruins
After an early breakfast, you will visit the 5th Century old Sigiriya Rock Fortress.
This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a spectacular rock fortress and is one of Sri Lanka’s major attractions. The most impressive facets of the unique complex are the Water Gardens, the Frescoes of beautiful maidens, the Mirror Wall with ancient graffiti, the Lion platform and the Summit of 1.6 hectares, which was completely covered by buildings during the period of Sigiriya’s glory. Built by King Kashyap (477-495 A.D), the ‘Lion Rock’ is a citadel of unusual beauty rising 200 metres from the jungle. The rock was the innermost stronghold of the 70-hectare fortified town and the base is ringed by a moat, rampart, and extensive gardens. The world-renowned frescoes (originally 500, of which only 19 remain today) which are in a sheltered pocket of the rock are painted in earth pigments on plaster. The old stairway to the top, led through the mouth of a crouching lion, was a magnificent site. Today, only the incredible huge paws remain which gives an indication of how massive the head of the lion was. As it remains, even the paws are an incredible site to behold. The Sigiriya Rock Fortress is a truly magnificent piece of Sri Lankan history and a stop on your tour to Sir Lankan that you will always remember. In the afternoon you will set off to explore the Medieval Capital of Polonnaruwa.
Transfer Time: Approx. 1.5 Hrs. (Sigiriya – Polonnaruwa)The second most ancient of Sri Lanka’s kingdoms, Polonnaruwa, was first declared the capital city by King Vijaya bahu I, who defeated the Chola invaders in 1070 CE to reunite the country once more under a local leader. Polonnaruwa is known to have been the pinnacle of the Golden Age of Sri Lanka. During the reign of Parakramabahu I, a ruler whose goal was to ensure no drop of water falling from the heavens be wasted, led to the development of irrigation systems which are still utilised to this day. The greatest of these systems – the Parikrama Samudra (Sea of Parikrama) is a tank so vast that it is often mistaken for an ocean. It circles the main city like a ribbon, acting both as a defensive border against intruders and the lifeline of the people in times of peace.

We had a great time and enjoyed the whole experience. I could see just what must have been involved in putting together a trip such as this and we both agree you did an outstanding job. Rolff was great on the post tour and the guide etc. in Varanasi. The Ganges was a wonderful experience. Again thanks and we will keep in touch.

Thank you to Nazir, Manzoor, Raj, Ravi, Niraj and the many other drivers and people who all worked so hard to make ths dream a reality. We had an amazing 14 days in India and Nepal. We were very fortunate that Nazir suggested we take a direct Air Canada flight from Vancouver. We got to Delhi in just under 14 hours arriving on Thursday which gave us an extra 3 days there before joining the tour group on Sunday. During that time we saw the Lotus temple, the Akshardam Temple, the Lodhi gardens, the memorial to Mahatma Gandhi and the Qutb Minar as well as other temples and Mosques. These monuments together with seeing the Jama Mosque and the Chandni Chowk area on Suday were the highlight of our stay in Delhi, and suggest that these be included in all tours of the City. We also especially enjoyed our stay in the Suryaa Hotel, not just because of the wonderfull hospitality there, but also because it is located right in the heart of the local market. This gave us the chance to wander about getting to know how the locals live there without the distraction or the influx of tour buses. We also went to see the Nizamuddin Market and the Nizamuddin Dargah there, and had an awsome dinner at Karim’s on the day of our arrival. We were hoping to take part in the evening devotional music there, but that didn’t seem to work out. Maybe next time! There were many highlights throughtout this tour, not to distract from the Taj Mahal which was more stunning than I could have imagined when it first came into sight. All the accomodation, meals, transportation and the drivers, helpers and guides were all first class. Nepal was another high light, especially our stay in Nagarkot and the drive up there. Nires was a delight to have with us and very informative as was Ravi on our India leg of our journey. The only other suggestion I have here is that we would have liked to have arrived in Nagarkot early enough so that we would have had time to go on a short hike on the famous Panoramic Hiking trail I heard about. Over all I have no complaints and only good memories on our amazing journey in India and Nepal. What I would say in a short review, or you can post this entire e-mail if you want, are my comments below: This was a personal road trip Manzoor and Nazir would take their families on, Expect to expect the unexpected! You will be sirprized, delighted, amazed and even stunned, but never disappointed. Through out our journey eveything was so well thought out and perfectly executed. Thank you to everyone who worked so had to make this a trip of a lifetime. Our memories will be with us forever. Thank you so much. Rose and Jim

Val and I had a wonderful time in India. We thought the tour was great and we managed to see a lot in the given time. The guides and drivers were very professional, knowledgeable and pleasant to be with. Our guide was adaptable when we wanted to change certain aspects of the program. The hotels we stayed in were fantastic. It was nice coming back to them after a day of touring. Highlights for me included Pushkar, Varanasi and the elephant and camel rides. I thought there was a good balance of city/rural life, history, culture and modern information and sites.

Just wanted to let you know what an awesome experience our trip to India was. Maxine and I really enjoyed it. Everyone in our group was wonderful and George sent us his amazing pictures. We would all laugh when we avoided what seemed to be an unavoidable head-on collision on the highway! I think the roads are the most amazing part of the trip. Our northern guide Mahendra added extras, like visits with his family, which really was special. The 4 of us who went south to Kerala were really glad we did…so different and beautiful. Can’t say enough about the trip. We would highly recommend it. If anyone is thinking about going and has any questions they can call me and I can tell them how wonderful it is.

Hi Nazir: John and I enjoyed the trip very much. Lots of wonderful memories and some very interesting experiences. We are aware that you had made several changes to the itinerary with Pat and Mike to accommodate their wishes and those of the Fitzsimmons. Many thanks for this. All in all things ran pretty smoothly. The money issue was, of course, no one's fault, but it certainly made for some unpleasant moments. All planned tours, guides, and drivers are to be commended. However, our driver was our favorite. He was friendly, on time, and willing to accommodate us in any way. He drove very well, provided lots of water and made every km of the trip satisfactory. It was a pleasure to know that he would be there every day. Thank you for a very interesting visit to India. Best,

I would like to say how much Janet and I enjoyed our recent trip to India and to commend you and your company for the organization of the trip. We would particularly like to recognize the efforts of our tour guide Yuvraj Singh for whom nothing was too much trouble and who was always helpful and informative and polite in answering our many questions. In closing, I would have no hesitation in recommending your company to any future prospective travellers to India. I hope both Yuvraj and yourself are in good health and I wish both of you and Explore India well in the future.

Just wanted to say thank you for a wonderful experience. You did a great job of organizing our trip and ensuring that we experienced the highlights of each of the countries that we travelled to. I am glad that we were able to have you accompany us on the trip. All of the guides were excellent. Hope to travel with you again someday. The trip to Cashmere would be great. Keep me posted. Thanks

Hello Nazir, We loved our trip!!!. So sad to leave but ready to come home. We loved all our guides and drivers. We especially appreciated having the same driver for consecutive days (Suresh and Suki were our driving heroes!!!). Accommodations were fantastic. The professionalism and organization of everyone were outstanding. We felt well cared for in a foreign country. We were so happy to start in the south and be able to ease into India and then travel to the north. I cannot even begin to describe India to folks here. I loved seeing so much and on my next trip would love to stay longer in certain places. We loved Cochi and Munnar in the south. In The north Varanasi, Pushkar, Jodhpur, Deogarth, the walk thru recycling in Mumbai and dinner with a psychologist in Udaipur were highlights. Of course the temples, the forts and palaces were amazing. Our guides were so knowledgeable and informative. The history, religion, spirituality, politics all were so fascinating to learn about. The opportunities to walk and eat outside of hotels were wonderful I wish there had been more. It's actually hard to identify highlights as every day was full of new experiences ones that were easy and beautiful as well as those that were more difficult to experience. All created a unique experience and a glimpse at a unique country. I speak for all three of us in thanking you for creating such an amazing experience. It truly was! Namaste,

Got home Wednesday night and recovering from the most incredible journey! Thank you so much for arranging everything so well! Yuvi is a great guide and companion. We had so much to talk about and had so many laughs together. He is a treasure in your organization and deserves to go far. The flight to Kashmir was his first time off the ground and he handled everything so well. From start to finish he was a wonderful companion and I am so glad to have had the same escort all the way. We got to know each other and to kid each other and I think I learned far more about India than I could get from books! Perhaps he learned a bit about Canadians too as he is in charge of groups after me. I must thank you too for the drivers. Kuljeet Singh is such a beautiful person. We three had wonderful experiences in Kashmir together. And what a skilful driver he is. I think of him as the terror of Srinigar! Everything just gets out of Kool's way! He was a better guide in the mountains than Asti was guide in Delhi! On the way to the airport for Kashmir, Kool answered questions I had for Asti who sort of didn't answer when he didn't know. Kool kept his mouth shut as driver in Delhi, but he is a great guide and very personable. Baluinder Singh is a great driver and very knowledgeable too. He is a great person to get to know and we had lovely chats with Yuvi of course on the drives from Delhi to Jaipur and then on to Agra. Balu surely knows great restaurants. I think it was K.R. Joshi who got me to give both a radio interview one night and a TV interview the next on the houseboat in Srinigar. So the Canadian writer, female, aged 92, gave K.R. a boost in his job. I wanted to get a white T shirt with Kashmir in big blue letters across the front but we couldn't stop on the way to the airport as there was a demonstration going on. If K.R. would like to thank me for those interviews, maybe he could send me a T-shirt size XL, white with KASHMIR in blue letters across the front! It's good advertising for him! In Gulmarg I saw the Tshirts in a window but it was raining in BUCKETS, so nobody stopped walking fast! I have emailed my son and daughter-in-law in England to advise them that not to get in touch with you for a mind exploding experience is to deny themselves a gift thatgoes far beyond money. I hope you hear from them. Shall I be recommending in my writing and in my lectures that to see India with Incredible India is the fabulous best cared for way to do it? You can be sure that I will. Thank you again for looking after all my doubts and questions. As for the train ride! Getting into a discussion of a number of things with an English professor, male, Muslim, a professor of psychiatry, female, Hindu, Yuri, a Brahmin and me while rattling along at high speed at night will always be one of my most wonderful travel memories of my life of many many travel memories!

Hello Nazir. We got back from our trip to India on March 1st. Just as you promised, we had a fabulous and amazing trip, and are so glad we went! Thank you so much for making the arrangements for us. I hope your trip there went as well as ours did. I also wanted to let you know what a great job our guide Sundeep Singh did on behalf of Explore India. I cannot understate how much his presence added to the enjoyment of our trip, and that of our fellow travellers. First of all his knowledge of all things India was amazing. He told us all we could possibly want in understandable lay man’s terms about the history of your country, but he also surprised us with his knowledge of even minute details about all the flora and fauna we came across. I’m not surprised he is working towards his PHD in history. In addition, his professionalism and demeanor towards all of his “respected guests” was top notch. He always gave clear and concise directions to our group, and knew how give them to us in a “just in time” fashion rather than bombarding us with information before we needed it. This is not an easy thing to do with as large a group as ours was. He was always able to do this in a professional yet down to earth fashion. Sundeep was also able to make the quick hard decisions when the situation warranted it, so they did not become group debates. He was also always on guard for our safety and security, and he always found good clean restaurants for us that served “yummy” food, and stopped at restrooms that were as clean as possible. Thank you again for such a wonderful experience. It would be appreciated if you could pass on our feedback to Sundeep, and let him how much his services added to the enjoyment of our trip. I have already passed your name and company information on to some of our friends, with a strong recommendation for them to follow us and go Explore India. I wish you and your company well in the future. Sincerely,

No company is big or small when you have 100% capability of exceeding guest expectations. A rating of 10 out of 10 does not adequately reflect the level of the experience and value of the tour that we provide to India especially for the first time visitors. Explore India’s success can be traced all the way back to those early days of learning what it means to be a host and to this day, our motto is to treat the guest like a member of the family. A sure testimonial to the business, given the fact that many Canadians have travelled not one, not twice, but three times with Explore India, the early teachings seem to have paid off, as touring to India with us is a sought-after experience in Canada and beyond.
